Nurse practitioner contractor decision tool

Nurse Practitioner 1099 vs W-2 Calculator

Compare an NP employee package with contractor compensation and solve for the annual and hourly 1099 rate needed to match estimated W-2 take-home.

NP contractor offers can shift professional costs to you

A nurse practitioner evaluating 1099 work may need to account for malpractice coverage, licensing and renewal costs, continuing education, credentialing-related expenses, equipment or technology, health insurance and other costs that an employer may currently pay or subsidize. Contract terms also matter: guaranteed hours, cancellation provisions, travel reimbursement, call expectations and payment timing can change the economic value of the offer even when the headline annual rate looks higher.

The calculator does not silently add profession-specific tax rules. It uses the same audited federal and state engine as every other page while letting the NP scenario start from editable cost and hour assumptions that better match the decision context.

Separate break-even from the premium you want for contract risk

First calculate the minimum contractor gross that matches the W-2 take-home result. Then evaluate whether the offer should pay more for lost benefits, lack of paid time off, schedule volatility, liability exposure, credentialing delays or shorter contract duration. A break-even target answers “what keeps me financially even?”; it does not automatically answer “what rate makes independent contracting attractive enough for me?”
