Federal + self-employment + New York state income tax.
Does New York tax 1099 income?
New York is modeled with its audited 2026 state individual income-tax path in addition to federal income tax and self-employment tax.
If you live in New York City or are subject to another local tax, treat this page as a state-and-federal baseline and add the local layer separately.
New York 1099 tax examples by income
The table below is calculated from the same production engine as the calculator above. It uses a single-filer baseline with no business expenses, no health-insurance deduction, no retirement contribution, no W-2 wages, no withholding and no estimated payments. Your personalized result above is more useful than these examples.

How the New York 1099 estimate is built
1. Start with net business profit
1099 forms report payments, but tax planning usually needs business profit. The calculator subtracts the business expenses you enter from gross 1099 revenue before the self-employment calculation. This is why two contractors with the same gross receipts can get different tax estimates.
2. Calculate self-employment tax separately
Self-employment tax is the Social Security and Medicare component generated by self-employment earnings. It is not the same as federal income tax and it does not disappear just because New York has its own state individual income-tax calculation.
3. Calculate federal income tax
The federal layer uses the documented 2026 single-filer schedule, standard deduction and the site's QBI model. A deductible self-employed retirement contribution can reduce modeled AGI and QBI without reducing the Schedule C profit used for self-employment tax.
4. Add the New York individual-income-tax layer
The New York state component is calculated separately from federal tax, which matters when you are deciding how much cash to reserve from 1099 payments. The result changes with modeled business profit rather than assuming one flat percentage. The state amount is shown as a separate result rather than hidden inside a blended percentage.
What this New York calculator does not include
New York City and Yonkers local income taxes, local business taxes, sales tax, entity-level taxes and special credits are not included on this standard state page.
It also does not prepare a tax return, determine worker classification, model every credit or itemized deduction, or reproduce every special state exception. If your situation involves multiple businesses, an S corporation, partnership income, local taxes or complex credits, use the result as a planning baseline and confirm the details with the official forms or a qualified tax professional.

What to do after you calculate the tax bill
A tax bill estimate answers “how much tax does this scenario generate?” It does not automatically answer how much cash is still unfunded or when to send a payment. Use the set-aside calculator to turn your result into a reserve percentage, then use the quarterly calculator if you need a federal estimated-payment target.
New York 1099 tax calculator FAQ
How much should I save for 1099 taxes in New York?
There is no universal percentage. Use the calculator above for the tax bill, then open the set-aside calculator to account for withholding and payments already made and convert the remaining amount into a practical percentage of gross 1099 revenue.
Is self-employment tax the same as New York state tax?
No. Self-employment tax is the federal Social Security and Medicare component. New York state individual income tax is a separate line in this calculator.
Do business expenses reduce 1099 taxes in New York?
Eligible business expenses reduce the modeled Schedule C-style profit. That can change self-employment tax, federal income tax and, depending on the state starting-income rules, the state estimate. Enter realistic expenses rather than assuming all gross receipts are profit.
Can I use this page if I also have a W-2 job?
Use the full 1099 tax calculator instead. W-2 wages affect federal progressive tax, Social Security wage-base coordination and withholding, so a pure 1099 state page is not the best model for a mixed-income situation.
