DELIVERY DRIVER TAX GUIDE

DoorDash Driver Tax Calculator 2026

DoorDash delivery income from independent-contractor work is generally self-employment income. Your reserve should be based on business profit and your full tax picture, not simply a percentage copied from another driver.

DIRECT ANSWER

How do DoorDash driver taxes work in 2026?

Delivery drivers often have substantial vehicle use plus many small operating costs. Reconcile gross delivery income, platform-related charges and deductible business expenses before estimating taxes. For 2026, the IRS changed the business mileage rate during the year, which makes date-specific mileage records especially important.

The IRS says gig-economy income is taxable even when the work is part-time, temporary or not reported on an information return. Use the forms you receive to reconcile your records, but base the tax estimate on the complete business activity required by the tax rules.

EXPENSES TO REVIEW

Common tax deductions for a DoorDash driver

These are categories to review, not automatic deductions. A cost still needs to meet the tax rules and be supported by records.

Delivery mileage or actual vehicle method

Use a reliable mileage log and do not combine standard mileage with the same actual vehicle costs.

Insulated bags and delivery gear

Bags, drink carriers and other work gear may be business expenses when ordinary and necessary.

Business-use phone and data

Navigation, order acceptance and customer communication can support a business-use allocation.

Parking and tolls

Keep records for business-related tolls and parking.

Platform-related fees

Use the annual payout and tax summary to reconcile gross income to deposits.

RECORDKEEPING

What records should you keep?

  • DoorDash annual earnings/tax summary
  • Dated mileage log
  • Receipts for bags and delivery gear
  • Phone/data and estimated-payment records
AVOID THESE

Common DoorDash driver tax mistakes

  • Saving 30% of deposits without reconciling gross income and expenses
  • Missing mileage because only odometer totals were kept
  • Double-counting gasoline while also using standard mileage
  • Ignoring other jobs or withholding when calculating the reserve
QUARTERLY TAXES

Do you need estimated tax payments?

Self-employed 1099 workers may need estimated payments during the year. The amount to save and the amount to send this quarter are separate questions. If you also have a W-2 job, payroll withholding can affect how much tax remains unfunded.

1099 forms are not the whole tax return

The IRS states that gig-economy income is taxable even if no Form 1099-K, 1099-NEC or other information return is issued. Keep your own income and expense records and reconcile them to any forms you receive.

HOW OUR ESTIMATE WORKS

Why this is more useful than “just save 30%”

The mini calculator uses the same documented 2026 planning engine as Analyze My Income's main 1099 tools. It starts with gross 1099 income, subtracts the business expenses you enter, estimates self-employment tax, federal income tax and the selected state income-tax path, then expresses modeled taxes as a share of gross 1099 revenue. The full calculator can also account for W-2 wages, withholding, health insurance and payments already made.
